Shamanic Snuff: Sacred Amazonian Rapé
Shamanic snuff — most often called rapé (pronounced "ha-PAY") or hapé — is a finely powdered ceremonial preparation made from sacred Amazonian tobacco and medicinal plants. It has been used by Indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin for generations as a tool for ceremonial focus, prayer, and connection to ancestral tradition.
What Is Shamanic Snuff?
The term "shamanic snuff" is commonly used in the West to describe rapé, a preparation crafted and used by tribes such as the Huni Kuin, Yawanawá, Nukini, Katukina, and Kuntanawa. Each blend carries a distinct formulation passed down through tribal lineage — the plants used, the ratio, and the preparation method are considered sacred knowledge.
Unlike commercially produced nasal snuff, authentic rapé is a ceremonial substance. It is traditionally administered using a kuripe (a V-shaped self-applicator) or a tepi (a long blow pipe used between two people). The preparation is held in great cultural reverence.
