What is Hapé (Rapéh)?

Hapé (also spelled Rapé and pronounced ha-peh) is a sacred Amazonian snuff used ceremonially by Indigenous tribes of the Amazon rainforest, particularly in Brazil and Peru. It is a finely powdered blend of sacred jungle plants, tree ashes, and most importantly, Mapacho — a powerful jungle tobacco (Nicotiana rustica) known for its deep spiritual significance. Mapacho is revered as a Grandfather Spirit, offering protection, clarity, and guidance.

Where Does Hapé Come From?

The base of all Hapé is burnt Mapacho and botanicals. Hapé is made by various Indigenous tribes, each with their own unique recipes, prayers, and intentions. Some of the most well-known tribes include the Yawanawá, Katukina, Huni Kuin (Kaxinawá), Kuntanawa, and Nukini. The ingredients and preparation process are often passed down through generations and held in great spiritual regard, creating a deep connection through traditional Indigenous practices.

How is Administer?

Traditionally, Hapé is blown into each nostril using a pipe made from bamboo or bone. There are two types of applicators:

  • Tepi – a long pipe used by a facilitator to administer to another person.

  • Kuripe – a self-applicator used when administering to oneself.

The act of receiving Hapé is a ceremony in itself, often preceded by intention setting, grounding, and prayers. Shamans and medicine carriers blow the powder forcefully into the nostrils, allowing the spirit of the plants to enter and work directly through the energy centers and physical body.

What are the benefits of Hapé?

Hapé is traditionally used as a sacred tool for grounding, energetic realignment, and spiritual clarity. Many people work with it to release stagnant energy, clear emotional heaviness, and create space for deeper reflection and healing. Whether you are seeking inner balance, guidance, or a stronger connection to the Earth, Hapé can support a meaningful path toward spiritual alignment and presence.
