What Is Kambo?

Kambo is not a psychedelic. It does not produce visions or altered states. What it does produce is a rapid, intense physiological purge — a full-body reset that many people describe as one of the most profoundly clarifying experiences of their lives.

The secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor frog contains a complex cocktail of peptides. When applied to small burn points on the skin, these peptides enter the lymphatic system rapidly, producing an intense purge typically lasting 20–40 minutes. After the medicine passes, many people report feeling lighter, clearer, and more energized than they have in years.

In the traditional Matsés context, Kambo was used before hunting — to sharpen senses, clear physical heaviness, and restore vitality. What to Expect at a Pillars of Light Kambo Session

Every Kambo session at Pillars of Light is a private, one-on-one ceremony conducted in our dedicated ceremonial space at 318 Main Street, Suite D in Old Town Spring.

Before the Session

You will receive detailed preparation instructions when you book. In general:

- Fast for 8–12 hours before your session (water only)

- Avoid alcohol, recreational substances, and stimulants for 24–48 hours beforehand

- Arrive well-rested and with a clear intention for the session

- Wear comfortable, loose clothing — you will be lying down and purging

During the Session

- Your facilitator will open the space with prayer and intention-setting

- Small burn points (called "gates") are made on the surface of the skin — typically 3–5 for a first session — using a small ember

- The Kambo secretion is applied to the gates

- Within minutes the medicine activates — pulse rises, face may swell, nausea and purging follow

- Your facilitator stays with you throughout, supporting and holding space

- The intense phase typically lasts 20–45 minutes

- After the medicine passes, you rest and integrate in the space

After the Session

You will need 2–4 hours of rest after your session. Do not drive immediately afterward. We recommend keeping the rest of your day clear and gentle. Most people feel significantly clearer and lighter within a few hours of completion.

Who Is Kambo For?

Kambo is not for everyone, and we take screening seriously. This medicine is best suited for:

Who Should NOT do Kambo

Kambo is contraindicated for people with certain health conditions. We require a brief health intake before every session. Do not book if you have:

- Heart conditions or serious cardiovascular issues

- Active mental health conditions including psychosis or severe anxiety disorders

- A history of stroke or brain hemorrhage

- Addison's disease, immune system disorders, or organ transplants

- Are pregnant or breastfeeding

- Have used bufo, 5-MeO-DMT, or flood-dose Ayahuasca within 4 weeks

The Kambo We Use

The Kambo secretion used in our ceremonies is ethically harvested from wild-caught Phyllomedusa bicolor frogs. Traditional harvesting involves capturing the frog, gently stretching its legs, collecting the secretion from its skin, and releasing it unharmed. We source only from suppliers who follow this traditional and humane process. No frogs are harmed.

We use authentic Matsés-tradition Kambo sticks — the same format used in traditional Amazonian ceremony.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kambo legal?

Yes. Kambo is legal in the United States and most countries worldwide. It is not a controlled substance and is not classified as a drug.

Is Kambo a psychedelic?

No. Kambo does not contain psychoactive compounds and does not produce hallucinations or altered states of consciousness. The experience is intensely physical — a purge — not a visionary experience.

How many sessions do I need?

Many people find one or two sessions profoundly impactful. Some return seasonally or when they feel called. Traditional practice often involves three sessions in a short window (called a "dieta sequence") for deeper work. This is entirely personal.

Will I vomit?

Most people vomit during a Kambo ceremony. Purging is considered an important part of the process — it is what the medicine is designed to do. You will be provided with a bucket and full support throughout.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least a week in advance to allow time to receive and follow preparation instructions. Contact us to check availability.

Is this the same as the frog poison I've heard about?

Yes and no. "Frog poison" is a common description, but Kambo is not used to poison prey — it was traditionally used by the Matsés as a pre-hunt preparation for hunters, to sharpen their senses and clear heaviness. In ceremonial use it is used for resetting and renewal, not harm.
