Bobinsana: The Sacred Amazonian Heart Plant
Bobinsana (Calliandra angustifolia) is a flowering plant native to the river banks and floodplains of the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon. For generations, Indigenous communities throughout the Amazon basin have regarded Bobinsana as one of the most revered ceremonial plants in the rainforest — a plant associated with the deep, rhythmic pulse of Amazonian river life.
A Plant of the River's Edge
Bobinsana grows along the edges of Amazonian waterways, where its vibrant pink blossoms create a distinctive silhouette above the water. The Shipibo and other Amazonian peoples have long recognized Bobinsana as a "master plant" — a plant teacher that plays a role in traditional ceremonial practice and apprenticeship within their traditions.
The plant is prepared in a variety of traditional forms: as a hapé blend, as a tincture, or incorporated into other ceremonial preparations. Its use is deeply embedded in Amazonian cosmology — it is often associated with feminine, heart-centered energies in the traditions of the tribes that work with it.
